Your Enemy in a Feature Film Budget

It is very important as you are creating feature films to understand what your enemies are.  Aside from the obvious things like technical difficulties, you need to be aware that there are other problems that you can encounter which will adversely affect your budget, and possibly hurt your film as well.  Knowing in advance what these problems are is critical to making sure that you are successful even if the problems appear.  Your budget will always be prone to problems, but your worst enemy is likely right in front of you and you are just overlooking it.

If you stop and think about the various aspects of your budget, you are probably thinking about salaries, and equipment plus perhaps even location fees and permits.  These are all aspects that can eat at your budget, but because they are accounted for, they generally do not hurt you too badly.  The biggest threat to the budget will be those expenses that are not accounted for.  This can include anything that you forget to include, which will undoubtedly be extremely expensive, no matter how minor it might seem.

One such example of an unexpected expense could be a damage charge.  If you have rented equipment that has managed to be damaged somehow in the shoot, you can look forward to a charge for the damage.  Additionally, if you are late returning the equipment you can look forward to a late charge being added onto the rental.  This can often be as much as 100% of the rental costs, which will really impact your budget.  Looking to curb these expenses obviously means you need to stay on time for your schedule, but it also means taking very good care of the equipment that you have rented.

Many filmmakers are unaware of the need to rent a location until they have been hit with a fine.  These expenses have to be taken into account as well and will often throw your budget completely off track.  Typically speaking it is best to save at least 10% of your budget for these unexpected expenses so after you are all done, you will still have some money left over.  Many budgets need more than just 10% to handle these unexpected expenses, and other budgets do not even use the whole 10%.

Determining exactly how much you will need is often flexible.  Typically speaking the larger your budget, and the more equipment you need to rent, the larger the amount that needs to be set aside for the unexpected expenses.  If you are able to avoid all of your budget overages, you will be able to save a ton of money that would otherwise be blown.

Filmmakers who are working with a zero budget typically are much more careful about unexpected expenses.  This is the type of dedication that you need to take into account anytime you are working on a film so that you can reduce costs.  One way to really help keep tabs of the budget is to continuously keep a running tab of expenses.  This will be helpful if you are starting to feel like you are getting close to your limit.  Knowing when to start getting really tight with the budget is important.  You should always avoid spending the unexpected budget on anything that is not considered an unexpected expense since the money will most likely be needed at some point.

Are you a homeschooling parent? If so, a good percentage of your life revolves around your children and their schooling. 1 – Take a Field Trip

Field trips are common in public and private school systems, so why not incorporate them into your homeschooling program? If you and your children do not take regular field trips, such as once a month, consider doing so.

When it comes to homeschool field trips, you have many different options. When possible, incorporate your field trip into your current lesson plan. For example, are your children learning about the history of the United States? If so, see if there are history museums located nearby. Museums, petting farms, zoos, and parks, make great destinations for homeschool field trips.

2 – Try Something New

If you and your children do not take field trips, that will achieve the New Year’s resolution of trying something new, but examine other opportunities. In public and private schools, most children learn by listening to lectures, watching videos, doing homework, and reading textbooks. Yes, these approaches do work, but consider hands-on learning. If you already use interactive demonstrations to teach your child, take it a step farther. Use craft projects if you aren’t. Is your child learning about the solar system? Create paper mache mobiles or dioramas with them.

3 – Join a Local Homeschooling Group

One problem that homeschooling parents and home schooled children face is limited social interaction. You can stop that from happening by joining a local homeschooling group. Homeschooling has increased in popularity, so you may be surprised to see how many other homeschooling families there are nearby. You can use the internet or contact your local school district to learn about homeschooling groups in or around your area.

Although homeschooling is increasing in popularity, you may have a difficult time finding a local group in your community. If you live in a small town, you may have to drive an hour or more to participate in home school events. If unable to do so, place an advertisement in your local newspaper looking for other homeschooling families. If you have enough, start your own group.

4 – Get Social Interaction for Your Kids

As previously stated, some kids lack social interaction when homeschooled. If you haven’t already taken steps to get your kids needed social interaction, do so. Make it your New Year’s resolution. As previously stated, homeschooling groups are a great place to go. Many groups have weekly or monthly events where both parents and children are welcome. Also, something as simple as taking your child to the park each week can get them interaction with other kids.

5 – Get Social Interaction Yourself

It is important to make sure your children are socially active, but yourself too. Many homeschooling parents are stay-at-home or work-at-home parents. To prevent yourself from becoming too isolated, stay active. If you aren’t already, make it your New Year’s resolution. In addition to joining a homeschooling group, look for other mom groups in your community, trade phone numbers with other parents at the park or join a gym.

If you work as a business coach, it is your job to train and education business owners, operating managers, and all remaining employees.  Running a successful and profitable business starts at the top and works its way down.

Your responsibilities, as a business coach, include getting your client to understand the important aspects of running a business, such as sales, marketing, communication, organization, and conflict resolution.  This is an important job and you know this.  But, there are some business owners who wonder if using the services of a business coach are worth it.  It is also your job to convince them that it is.

Coaching – Is It Worth It? Really In the Long Term.

You need to convince potential clients that your service is great and more than worth the money.  This is nice to know, but how?  Continue reading on for a few sample ideas.

You can do so with promotional brochures and free promotional items.  Sending a pamphlet outlining your services and how they can increase sales is a great idea, but these brochures often just get thrown in the trash.  Include more!  Add a free magnet or pen with your company name, address, and phone number.  People love and will use free stuff, so your name will get seen.  The struggling business owner may literally be stressing about their future and glance over to see your logo in their office.

You can do so by offering discounts.  Many of the business owners who use the services of a business coach are struggling.  Some are barely staying afloat financially.  They need to use their money wisely.  Make it seem like they are getting a good deal.  Offer a small, but meaningful discount on your services.  Also, include extra bonuses in your package.  Most business coaches hold training seminars.  Include, as a bonus, free printed guides for each employee.  These guides allow for later reference, long after your training session has ended.

You can do so by offering free consultations and assessments.  As previously stated, most business owner who uses coaches are struggling.  Unfortunately, some wait until they are in the red to seek help.  Offer free consultations and assessments.  Show the business owner or operating manager that they are heading down a dangerous path.  Use their records to show what they can expect the next year if swift action is not taken.  Then, go into great deal about how you can turn their business around.  For example, you will teach that business owner the importance of local and internet marketing, and share unique marketing tactics with them.

You can do so by being a real person.  Your job, as a business coach, is a professional one.  It is important to stay professional, but business coaches work side-by-side their clients.  You need to show these people that you are a real person, more than just a suit.  Some struggling business owners fear seeking help because they are afraid that their ideas and actions will be dissected and criticized.  Yes, this is your job, but always put a positive spin on things.  When soliciting business, never blame a business owner.  Comment that they did many great things, but a few simple improvements can do wonders.

In short, business coaching is a valuable service for all small, medium, and large companies.  Unfortunately, not everyone sees it that way.  For that reason, market yourself, get the word out, and encourage those in trouble to save their business and with your help.

If you want to offer your services as a business coach, there many areas of business that you need to familiarize yourself with.  After all, if you don’t know the keys to running a successful business, how can you teach others?

As previously stated, there are many areas of running a business that new and struggling business owners need assistance with.  One of those areas is business communication.  Business owners need to learn to properly communicate with employees and clients.  Employees need to learn how to communicate with their bosses, coworkers, and clients.  It goes on and on.  Proper communication is key to running a successful and profitable business.

So, what will you, as a business coach, need to teach your clients?

The best way to communicate.  Technology has given us many ways to communicate with friends, family, coworkers, clients, and employees.  Just a sample of the options available includes letters, faxes, emails, text messages, and phone calls.  Which option is best?  It depends on the type of business.  Other than emergencies, all professionals should avoid text messages.  Instead, they should pickup the phone, send a fax, or write a well-composed email.

Coaching and Communication Etiquette.

This is important for both communication with coworkers and clients.  Some inexperienced workers and business owners do not fully understand the importance of politeness and etiquette.  You need to show them.  For example, it is okay to use abbreviations in personal emails, like BRB or LOL, but never with business communications.  In emails, all writers should identify themselves by name and position and address all recipients the same.  It is the polite and professional thing to do.

Tips for improving writing skills.  Unfortunately, all of our writing skills have suffered.  The internet, instant messaging programs, and text messages make it particularly hard to write by hand and legibly.  Your job as a business coach is to stress the importance of proper writing.  Highlight the importance of proper spelling, grammar, proofreading, and good sentence structure.

The importance of clear communication.  In business, straightforward directions and little rambling is best.  You client’s customers don’t want to know about the day they are having or what the weather is like; they want to know if you can help them.  A good approach is to find former letters and emails and dissect them.  Show, by example, if it is good or bad and what changes can be made.

Giving both bad and good news.  Business owners, rarely deliver only good news.  For example, a retail store may have processed an order for a client, only to later learn that item is out of stock. They must then contact that customer to inform them that their order cannot be filled.  Some just say “your order cannot be filled.”  Stress the importance of keeping that customer happy.  In this situation, a formal apology, notification of when the item becomes available, and a small discount is best.

The importance of listening.  Business owners and their employees should never make a client repeat him or herself.  The same is true for other in-office communication.  Coworkers and bosses should only need to ask someone to do a task once.  Stress the importance of taking notes.  There is less risk of errors and no having to ask someone to explain themselves again.

Non-verbal communication.  A lot of business focus is placed on the word we speak or type, but communication can be non-verbal too.  This includes body language, appearance, and actions.  When meeting with a client, conservative apparel sends the proper message.  Soft, but confident tones are best.  As for body language, this is difficult.  Some send signals without even realizing it.  Stress the importance of monitoring your body language and learning to control impulsive actions.

These are just a few of the communication areas you will want to focus on as a business coach.  Regardless of who are you working with, whether it be a business owner, paid employees, or both, all business can benefit and profit from good and proper communication.

Traditionally, the Council is chaired by the foreign minister of the country holding the chairmanship. Do you have a business management degree or years of experience running a profitable small to medium-sized business?  If you are looking for a new career path or if you want to increase your moneymaking opportunities, business coaching is the way to go.  Both a degree and on the job experience deems you qualified enough to teach others.

When offering your services as a business coach, there are many areas of business you need to consider.  Marketing is the most common.  Marketing enables the public to know about a company and the products or services they sell. Your step-by-step guide to running a successful and profitable business should include marketing, but don’t forget the smaller aspects.  For example, conflict resolution.

Conflict is common in the workplace and it comes in many different formats.

Coworkers have conflict with each other.  Supervisors have conflict with their employees.  Business owners and employees have conflicts with clients.  Honestly, the list goes on and on.  Although conflict is common in the workplace, it is unhealthy.  It is your job to teach small business owners and their employees how to avoid workplace conflict and how to resolve it quickly and peacefully.

One of the best ways to teach your clients about conflict resolution is with role-playing.  If hosting a seminar retraining employees, pick a couple from the group.  Start with two employees playing themselves.  This is very important.  A disruptive workplace starts a chain reaction.  Create the scenario where the two coworkers are supposed to be working jointly on a project, but only one is carrying their weight.  Allow the two to attempt to resolve the problem themselves.  Then, step in.  Highlight the good choices and the bad.  Then, coach these coworkers through a positive resolution.  This involves calm voices, friendly tones, and no finger pointing.

Next, work on the conflict between supervisors and employees.

If the business owner or manager is present you can use them for the exercise, but you may find little volunteers.  If that is the case, select one or, once again, use two employees.  Create the scenario that the boss is unhappy with the employee constantly showing up for work.  Start with the supervisor.  They need to calmly approach their employee and state their dissatisfaction.  Do not blame or accuse.  Next, the late-arriving employee needs to explain him or herself.  In this situation, it is best just to apologize for the delay and state it will not happen again.  Excuses may lead to conflict.

Finally, role-play with a client and an employee.

All businesses strive to please their clients, but no one is ever 100% happy.  If the company you are working with is a retail store, use the example that a customer was double charged for a product.  They arrive in the store the next day.  There is little proof that they were overcharged.  In this situation, many employees and managers try to get out of refunds.  No business wants to lose or handout money but think of the consequences.  A happy customer tells their friends, but an unhappy customer tells anyone who will listen.  Think long-term and about the company’s and employee’s reputation.  Offer a refund or allow the customer to grab another of the product.

As previously stated, the best way to practice conflict resolution is with role-playing.

Unfortunately, not all business coaches are able to meet with their clients face-to-face.  In these instances, create literature for the business owner, supervisors, and employees to read.  Make it clear, short, and easy to read.

Regardless of how you teach your clients about conflict resolution, always highlight the important points in the end.  These include the consequences of conflict.  They are an unhappy client or disruptions in the workplace that can start a chain reaction.  Then restate the ways to avoid conflict, such as not placing blame, talking in a friendly tone, and addressing all issues as they arise and not later down the road.

Are you a parent?  If you are, you may be curious as to when children regularly start using the internet.  In all honesty, you will find that it depends.  There are some parents who start their children with using a computer and the internet right away and others wait until their children need to do so for school.  So, how young is too young for your child to use the internet?

What many parents, especially first time parents, do not realize is that some elementary schools teach their children how to use a computer as young as first grade.  Of course, they may not learn how to surf the internet, but they do often learn the basics.  These basics may include learning how to type, how to turn on a computer, how to use a computer mouse, and so froth.

In keeping with young age, there are many parents who allow their toddlers and preschoolers to play computer games.  Although software for those games can be purchased online or in most media stores, some parents turn to the internet.

The good news about this approach is that many trusted websites, like those for Nick Jr, PBS Kids, and PlayHouse Disney do not have harmful advertisements on their websites that your child could accidentally click on.

Young elementary school children are also likely to use the internet and a computer in general to play computer games.  Towards the fifth or sixth grade, children may start to use the internet to do research for school projects.  This is when it is really important to start monitoring your child’s use of the internet.  Even if your child doesn’t use online social networking websites, use internet chat rooms, or visit pornographic websites, it doesn’t mean that they can’t accidentally come across them.  Some websites are not very careful with what advertisements they show.

Junior high school and high school students, honestly, need the most monitoring online.  These are students who not only use the internet to research, but to communicate with their friends and to make new friends.  Unfortunately, not all teenagers are educated on the dangers that lurk online, especially where internet chat rooms and social networking websites are concerned.

When are children ready to go online?  After they have been trained to stick to the  rules.

So, is your child ready to use a computer and the internet?  As stated above, it is your decision to make.  With that being said, be sure to use your best judgment and be sure to establish some firm ground rules.  Children who are at least seven years of age should never be allowed to use a computer alone.  Strict rules should be imposed for older children.

Speaking of internet safety rules, be sure to make your views on social networking websites and internet chat rooms clear.  If you don’t want your child to use them, state so.  If they are allowed, establish rules.  A few rules to get you started involve making a social networking website profiles private, not communicating directly with strangers, not trading personal information online, and not posting personal pictures or videos online.
As a reminder, you have the ability to determine when and where you child can access the internet.  Just be sure that if you do allow your child to use the internet that you establish ground rules.  Even toddlers and preschoolers should be able to follow these rules, such as only playing games on the website you get them set on.

How does your child act when they are using the computer?  Does your child try to hide what they are doing online from you?  If they automatically shut off the computer or put a game on the screen, they may be trying to prevent you from seeing what they are doing online.  This is a good sign that your child may be doing something they shouldn’t be doing online, like having direct, personal conversations with a stranger, who may be a child predator.

3 – They Are Very Happy When Getting Off the Computer

If your child is overly happy when they sign off the internet, they may be on the path to trouble.  This sign can be a little bit tricky though.  Your child may be happy because they just finished a long school project, but you honestly never know.  If your teenager is communicating with someone online, they may be in the process of starting a relationship, which they are happy about.  Unfortunately, many teenagers do not realize that anyone can hide behind a computer.  That is why it is important that you talk to your child about the dangers of starting an online romance.

4 – They Are Very Depressed

As previously stated, your child may be very happy when using the internet, but another warning sign is that they are depressed, especially when they sign off the computer.  What many parents do not realize is that other teenagers use the internet for harassment.  If your teenager has a falling out with one of their friends, they may find themselves being harassed online.  If that is the case, your child may seem very down, depressed, and withdrawn.

The four above mentioned signs are just a few of the many that you will want to look for to see if your child is in trouble online.  With that said, there are additional signs that you will want to be on the lookout for, the biggest being a change in behavior.  If you do suspect that your child has or is about to run into trouble online, be sure to talk to them and as soon as possible.

As for why online chat rooms, private instant messaging programs, and social networking sites are dangerous, it is important to remember that the internet makes it easy to pretend to be someone else.  Your child may unknowingly end up making a 50 year old friend, thinking that friend is their own age.  Information posted online has also been used for harassment or harmful purposes when otherwise high school or junior high school friends have a falling out.

Now that you know the importance of staying updated and in the know about your child’s internet use, you may be curious as to how you can go about doing so.  The good news is that it is relatively easy to do so.

The first step is to make sure that you are computer literate yourself.  Do you know how to check your computer’s internet history?  Better yet, do you even know what a computer’s internet history is or does?  If not, you will want to take a computer course or ask a trusted friend or relative, other than your child, to give you a crash course. You will want to learn as much as you can about the internet and a computer, but be sure to know about parental controls, a computer’s internet history, and so forth.

Speaking of checking your computer’s internet history, be sure that you do so.  Your computer’s internet history records all of the websites that are visited within the last week or past few days.  To do so, open up a new Internet Explorer window.  Towards the top of the page you should see a number of icons.  Click on the one that has a clock with a green arrow partly around it.  This should be the computer’s internet history.  What websites has your teenager or child visited?

Another easy way to stay involved in your child’s internet use is to set parental controls.  Most computers come standard with them.  Make your parental controls password protected.  Do not give your child the password, but do use it to unlock websites that may innocently be blocked on accident, like those needed for a school research project.

Moving your child’s computer into a family room or a frequently traveled room is advised.  In fact, your child should be able to use a shared family computer.  This tends to limit the visiting of potential dangerous chat rooms and social networking websites, as most teens like to view these sites in private.  If you must, limit your child’s use of the computer to certain times, like when you are home or in the room.

Be sure to talk to your child about the dangers of the internet.  Let them know that it is possible to meet internet predators online, especially with the use of private chat rooms or social networking websites.  Let them know that if they are harassed, whether it be by someone they know or don’t know, contact you immediately.  You may, in turn, want to contact the proper authorities.

As it was previously stated, the internet makes it easy to create a new, false identity.  Often times, the individuals who lie about their ages are internet predators.  They are the ones who target children, like yours.  Unfortunately, many children, teenagers, and their parents cannot tell an internet predator until it is too late, like when the predators try to approach your child or contact them in person.

3 – So Many Websites To Choose From

What is nice about the internet is that you have so many websites to choose from.  In fact, that is why it is a good way to research school projects.  With that said, having so many websites to choose from can be dangerous.  Your child can gain access to social networking websites, adult chat rooms, pornographic websites, and websites that are violent in nature.  Unless you have parental controls set up, your child can easily access any type of website with a standard internet search.

4 – Not All Information Is Private

Unfortunately, many individuals, including both children and parents, do not know that the information that is posted online isn’t always private.  For starters, most teens have their MySpace profiles set to public, as opposed to private.  This means that anyone can view it.  There are also online message boards that are indexed by the search engines.  This means that others can view the conversations that were discussed, even years down the road.

5 – They Are In Control

When your child uses the internet, they are the ones who are in control.  This can be okay if your child is older and mature, but you honestly never know.  You may ask your child not to communicate with strangers online, give out their phone numbers, or share pictures with strangers, but that doesn’t mean that they will follow your rules.  For that reason, if you do let your child use the internet, be sure to monitor their use.
